The Adoption ProcessFinding Our Dogs The Best and Safest Homes
We are dedicated to the responsible rehoming of our dogs. We carefully consider every applicant through interviews, reference checks and an in-home visit to check for safety and suitability. The adoption process can take from a few days to a few weeks. This careful, deliberate process ensures that our dogs and their new families will be happy together, forever.
Step 1: Agree to the commitment
Adopting a dog is a long-term commitment. Ask yourself whether you really are ready to take on the financial responsibility of dog ownership, which includes the cost of food and supplies, vet bills, dog walking and vacation care.
Think through how you’d care for your dog if you were ever to become ill.
Step 2: Meet our dogs
It is often said that “a dog chooses their human”, so keep an open mind on which dog will end up being the best fit for you; it isn’t always the dog whose photo you fell in love with on our website. Please bring all members of your household to the meet and greet. While a pet may seem like a great gift idea, we do not adopt dogs out as gifts.
Step 3: Apply to adopt
Fill out our adoption application, which will help us determine whether the dog you’re interested in will be a good fit for your home and lifestyle. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Renters are required to provide landlord approval and a copy of the rental lease. We reserve the right to restrict adoptions to those who live within a 50 mile radius of Schaumburg, IL. NOTE: to increase your chances of adopting a dog, you may fill out the adoption application in advance of the first meeting.
Step 4: Home visit
Our volunteers will schedule an in-home visit with the dog. During this visit, we’ll watch to see how the dog reacts in your specific environment. If you have any other pets, they will be slowly and carefully introduced to the dog you want to adopt and their interactions will be closely evaluated during that process. If multiple applications are received for a specific dog, home visits will be held with each suitable applicant. We reserve the right to restrict adoptions to those who live within a 50 mile radius of Schaumburg, IL.
Step 5: Adoption
Our trained volunteers will determine which home among all applicants is the best fit for the dog, and the dog will be brought back to complete the adoption paperwork. Our adoption fee is $400.00-450.00 for adult dogs aged 7 months and up and $450.00 for puppies, and $700-800 for bonded pairs. The fee covers the cost of all medical care including all legally required inoculations, a fecal test and deworming (if required), spaying or neutering, and a microchip. Lifetime training is also included.
Step 6: Training
We provide free basic obedience training and socialization for the lifetime of all our dogs. All adopters are required to attend a minimum of 4 free training sessions within the first 3 months of adoption. Training is held in Medinah and/or Hoffman Estates and classes are offered 1-2 times per week. See the schedule and more information here. For this reason, adoptions may be restricted to those who live within a 50 mile radius of Schaumburg, IL.
